The social computing (SC) is a term coined by Paul Graham that describes the use of social media and technologies with the intent of helping people learn to use these new tools. The SC framework includes three main functions: (1) awareness, (2) interaction, and (3) application.
Well, I think the key word here is ‘awareness.’ It’s not just about being aware of your computer or your smartphone. It’s about being aware of your friends, of your Facebook status updates, of your tweets, of your LinkedIn profile, of your LinkedIn network, of your LinkedIn blog posts, of your LinkedIn video, of your LinkedIn email signature.
The same thing is true with social computing. You can’t just be a social media user without understanding how your social networking relationships work. You can’t just be a social media user without understanding how to post a status update that shows your presence on a Twitter list, how to message someone, or how to join a group with your LinkedIn profile.
I love that the title of this article is “Organizations are using social computing in which of the following functions?” I think that speaks volumes about how these social networking platforms have changed the way people do business. Before social networking, people had to rely on their word of mouth and physical connections.
