A common problem for people who are self-aware is that they think they can act on their own self-awareness and punish themselves without thinking about it to see what will happen. I have heard about a few people who feel that they can punish themselves in a way that is self-aware and they get “hurt.” This is not the case. The thought never enters the minds of these people.
I’ve gotten in trouble a lot over the years for writing punishment examples. I don’t think that writing out punishments is the most effective way to correct a self-aware person, but I do think it is the only way to correct someone who is self-aware. You don’t need to think about it or write it down. It is only necessary to write it. Writing it down and watching how it affects them makes it real.
It’s easy to write a punishment like, “you’re going to take a shower and you have to do it on the weekend.” But if you really want to make a difference, you need to write out the consequences of the behavior. To do that, you have to be aware of your behavior, you have to pay attention to what you’re doing and what you’re hearing.
It is very important for the writer to be self-aware of what she/he is writing. It is important to know how the writer is feeling and what is causing her/him to feel that way. There are times when we may be self-aware of what we are doing, but we are not necessarily aware of the cause. At times, our own actions cause us to feel as though we are punished.
This is one of those times. It is when we feel we are punished by others for our actions. It is as though we are punished for something that we may not even realize we are doing.
When I write about something that I feel is wrong, I do not immediately begin to feel as though I am being punished. Usually, I take a few moments to get my thoughts and feelings out before adding the words. The first few words are generally a little more than self-awareness. I need to think about how I feel about what I am writing and what I hope to get out of it. Then, I write the words.
